Common Ground Kaua’i Announces Master Plan

The intentions behind Common Ground Kauai’s special use permit application are to bring people together on the issues that are fundamental to the health of the community and to use the process as a way to chart direction on these and other issues that will strengthen the community at large. We want to see who stands up for what they believe in and build structure around these desires to inspire others.

This process will bring together an ecosystem of supporters around each of the initiatives and better design the programs and facilities needed to make it happen. So by the time we have the public hearings needed for approval, we will have more specific plans and the operational teams needed for the plans to flourish.

To get the process started, we ask that you let us know what programs you support and how you might become involved. We do not want you to feel that if you sign-up for supporting a program that you have to commit to doing anything other than declaring your support. As time passes, people will self-sort into the roles that fit them best. We believe the power of intention and healthy minds working together will yield extraordinary results.

Kilauea is at an inflection point. There are a series of developments related to the Kilauea Town Plan and the Kilauea Town Center that will set the trajectory of the community both physically and culturally for many years to come. The time to have this conversation is now and the conditions could not be much better.

Common Ground Kauai will be the landlord, steward and organizer of resources; it does not plan to own or operate the businesses being proposed. It casts the net that finds people with the passion to spark their aspect of this vision.

Food Processing Center

Organic Food Processing Center

This facility will help growers and entrepreneurs build wealth by offering access to educational services and the facilities needed to add value to their products. There will be classes in new food processing technologies, marketing, and fund raising. Also, community kitchens as well as food packaging and distribution facilities will be offered for rent to local farmers and entrepreneurs.

Green Retail

The green retail environment will include a local foods and household goods store that sells products with a low carbon footprint. The focus will be on making a market for organic local products and supplementing them with goods from off-island producers that practice fair trade. There is a farmers market venue and field-to-table restaurant planned for this area that will offer daily access to fresh local produce and nutritious meals.

Eco-tourism

The carbon footprint of the tourism industry throughout Hawaii is huge. Eco-camping as described in Kauai’s General Plan is a way for the hospitality industry to offer services with a lower ecological footprint. The story of what it means for a “learning visitor” to come to Kaua’i and stay in an eco-camping environment has considerable value. Connecting visitors to programs that support the community and the environment will help re-define the concept of tourism.
